Returning to the Golden State

SACRAMENTO – The capital of California has been a hotbed of senior softball for more than 20 years and as a result it has been named the host city for the 2013 Senior Softball USA Western Nationals.

The tournament will be held from July 30 through Aug. 4 at some of the best softball diamonds in the West.

“We are very excited to hold one of the premier senior softball tournaments of the year in our hometown,” said Terry Hennessy, chief executive officer of SSUSA.

Senior Softball-USA has been headquartered in Sacramento since it was founded by Bob Mitchell in 1988.

“The Western Nationals is a very special tournament because divisional winners have a chance to vie for the Holy Grail of Senior Softball — the Triple Grand Slam,” he added.

Teams winning the Western Championships play Eastern National champions at the US Nationals in Las Vegas. Teams that win the US Nationals and the World Masters Championships win the Triple Grand Slam.

Steve Hammond, president and chief executive officer of the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, said that Sacramento “provides the perfect backdrop to ensure a successful event.”

“Sacramento is a new city with a romantic past as evidenced by the Old Sacramento Historic Area, a 28-acre district along the Sacramento River. Wooden sidewalks, cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages transport visitors to this exciting chapter in our Gold Rush history.”

The area boasts 100 restored or reconstructed buildings that house some 125 shops and restaurants.
